Dancer Arm & Roller Alignment

Most intermittent tracking faults trace back to the dancer arm and roller assembly, not the forming tube. Start with the arm itself. Place a spirit level across the dancer arm shaft. If the bubble is off by more than 0.5mm over 300mm, loosen the lock collar, rotate the shaft to true level, and re-tighten using a cross-pattern sequence — 5 Nm on each screw, alternating sides. This eliminates the micro-skew that causes film to drift left or right over a full roll.

    • Bearing play check: Grasp each dancer arm bearing and push radially. Any movement exceeding 0.1mm means the bearing is worn. Replace it immediately. A bearing with 0.15mm of play introduces a wobble that registers as a 3–4mm bag length variation at high speed.
  • Side guide roller adjustment: Set each side guide roller so it just contacts the film edge without pinching. Lock the screw at exactly 5 Nm. Unwind brake calibration is the final piece. Start with the brake torque at 0.8 N. Run the machine at production speed. Watch the film web between the unwind and the dancer. If the film flutters or sags, increase torque in 0.2 N increments until the flutter stops. Stop at the lowest torque that eliminates flutter — typically 1.2–1.6 N for most films. Going higher than 2.5 N risks stretching the film and causing registration drift.   • Young’s modulus: This measures film stiffness. For high-speed VFFS lines (60+ bags/min), a modulus below 200 MPa leads to web flutter and registration drift. Ask your supplier for the modulus value in the machine direction (MD).

Re-wound scrap rolls are a common culprit. They look fine on the outside but have irregular winding tension that increases tracking variance by 3x compared to mill-wound rolls.   • Belt tension check: Press the belt at mid-span. Deflection should be 6–10 mm under moderate thumb pressure. Too loose: slip. Too tight: bearing overload and premature wear. Adjust the tensioning bolts in half-turn increments.
