A standard single-serve tea bag holds about 2–3 g of tea. Pyramid bags are usually a little larger to give whole leaves room, and family-size iced tea bags hold several single doses. Bag dimensions depend on the shape: flat, double-chamber, pyramid or drip coffee.
Use the chart below to plan a new product, then confirm the bag drawing with your machine supplier. Machine ranges come from Spack Machine’s SPM-600MH and SPM-T300.

How much tea goes in a tea bag?
Most single-serve bags hold 2–3 g, enough for one 200–250 mL cup. Fluffy herbal blends and whole leaf need more volume per gram, so they move to larger bags or pyramids rather than heavier fills. Dense fine-cut black tea fits a small flat bag.
On SPM-600MH a 6- or 8-head multihead weigher doses 1–10 g per bag to ±0.2 g, which covers single-serve and larger herbal doses.
How to choose your tea bag size
- Fix the dose per cup first, then pick the bag shape that holds that volume of your blend.
- Leave headspace for whole leaves to expand; pyramids help here.
- Check that the size fits your web width. SPM-600MH runs 120, 140 or 160 mm web.
- Size the envelope and carton around the finished bag, string and tag.
- Send your tea for a sample run to confirm the fill and look. Read how tea bags are made.
